The first season is a faithful adaptation of the comics' first two story arcs. An annual convention of serial killers and a young woman named Rose cross paths with Morpheus' quest.

Sturridge has the right appearance, but his performance highlights Dream's many shortcomings as a dramatic protagonist.

The people who are close to Dream are where the show really shines. Death, played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste, is a happy person in her brief appearance.

The character of John Dee, a mentally ill man who has inherited Dream's power, is portrayed by David Thewlis, who is as unsettling as the role demands.
